Cell Phone BRFSS Pilot
Macro conducted a cellular phone pilot survey for the Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance
Study (BRFSS) for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from October 2006
through February 2007. Conducted across six partnering states (Connecticut, Florida,
Massachusetts, Montana, New Jersey, and Texas), this pilot collected over 1,900 interviews
and advanced our understanding about cell phone sample surveys, the operational and
financial feasibility of using cell phone samples to supplement traditional RDD samples,
and the consequences of excluding the cell phone-only population from survey estimates.
During the pilot, we administered a questionnaire that included a series of screening
questions to establish whether we had contacted the correct number, whether the person
we were talking to was eligible (an 18+ adult), and whether it was a safe (i.e. not
driving or doing another activity where a survey could potentially be a distraction)
time to conduct a survey. In addition to about 10 minutes of health questions, we asked
various questions about cell phone usage and whether the respondent lived in a household
with a landline—to establish if they were a dual-user (cell and landline) or cell-only user.
In 2008, Macro will be conducting the cell phone BRFSS project for Texas, Connecticut, Virginia, and Montana. For each
state, 250 interviews will be collected with cell-only respondents over six months.
National Adult Tobacco Survey 2008 (NATS):
Macro will conduct the 2008-2009 National Adult Tobacco Survey (ATS), which will provide
evaluation data for CDC’s National Tobacco Control Program. The NATS is a telephone survey
conducted in English and Spanish; it also encompasses a cell phone data collection component,
for which Macro will partner with CDC to design the specific calling protocols and methodology.
MacroPoll Wireless
This omnibus survey of 250 cell phone respondents nationwide provides a cost-effective
means to reach respondents via cell phone. MacroPoll also incorporates a national landline
telephone sample in order to:
