Cultural Competence
Macro takes cultural competence seriously in all of our work. We realize that cultural competence is crucial for reaching diverse, underserved, and hard-to-reach populations. We strive to ensure that our research includes, and is valid for, underrepresented groups. We work to create or adapt our communications and services to fit the cultural diversity of the community they serve. Because our staff members come from diverse backgrounds, we often can provide staff people who share language, ethnicity, or other characteristics with your target audience and who are particularly competent in that area.

focus groupBrochures for People Living With HIV/AIDS
Macro interviewed and conducted focus groups with 150 persons living with HIV/AIDS to test a series of informational brochures on opportunistic infections (You Can Prevent PCP in Children, You Can Prevent CMV, and Opportunistic Infections and Your Pets). We used the results from the copy tests to formalize content for the brochures and to tailor the brochures to the needs, wants, and preferences of persons living with HIV/AIDS.

Medical researchersCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Focus Groups
With 3 weeks of notification, Macro coordinated seven focus groups in four cities over 2 weeks for CDC. The groups were conducted around HBO's movie premiere of Miss Evers' Boys, an original movie about the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Through these focus groups, we identified perceptions and concerns about medical research before and after the movie, and we assessed lingering concerns associated with the Tuskegee Study. As a result, we were able to identify appropriate strategies for developing a more effective dialog with African-Americans on these issues.
