| Daughters of Tradition
Macro partnered with White Bison, an American Indian-owned nonprofit organization committed to bringing healing to native communities, to write and develop materials for the Daughters of Tradition campaign. This program was designed for American Indian and Alaska Native girls aged 8 to 12 to help them learn the value of traditions and culture as a means of preventing risky behaviors. Through this partnership, we developed messages and products, including an activity booklet, journal, T-shirts, and stickers, and we tested the products in focus groups with American Indian girls and caring adults.
Your Time—Their Future
The Your Time—Their Future campaign, launched in September 1998, had
two primary objectives: to raise awareness of the connection between youth
participation in positive, skill-building activities and reduced substance
use, and to increase the proportion of caring adults involved in positive
activities with youth. To help reach our audience (adults who care about and
influence youth ages 7 to 14) and foster collaboration, Macro formed partnerships
with organizations such as the National Mentoring Partnership, Big Brothers
Big Sisters of America, the Points of Light Foundation, the National Prevention
Network, and the U.S. Chess Federation. We disseminated campaign messages
by developing television, radio, and print public service announcements; articles;
direct mailings; a toll-free telephone number; and a Web site.
Sister-to-Sister Summits
As part of our Girl Power! campaign, Macro collaborated with the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to host hundreds of Sister-to-Sister Summits. These 1-day events offered 9- to 14-year-old girls group chat sessions led by professional counselors, medical professionals, and others to encourage them to openly discuss in a safe environment the challenges they face. The outcomes of these summits have been published and have been used to help local agencies and communities develop programs and implement environmental support to address the needs of their girls. Macro's Girl Power! messages, diaries, and other materials played an important role in helping the girls express themselves at the Sister-to-Sister Summits.
