Concept Development & Testing
Photo: A woman thinking and writingFor Macro, developing a concept can be a goal unto itself, or simply the first step in our process of creating, marketing, and producing a product or campaign. We can provide many services essential at the outset of a project, including brainstorming content, themes, messages, creative approaches, and slogans. We test themes and messages with targeted audiences to gauge their usefulness and appeal and to ensure that projects are culturally appropriate.

Macro helped conceptualize A Family Guide To Keeping Youth Mentally Healthy & Drug Free, a Web site that focuses on the top six research-based family protective factors. We "recycled" these science-based protective factors from one of our earlier publications, Keeping Youth Drug Free, to showcase on the Family Guide site. We also assisted in developing ideas for the Family Guide Web site's content and official launch. Finally, we tested the site through remote and onsite usability studies.

In a first-of-its-kind effort, Macro assisted the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention in conceptualizing a substance abuse prevention effort directed at 3- to 6-year-olds, Building Blocks for a Healthy Future. We proposed developmentally appropriate materials and activities that appeal to a broad range of learning styles and cultural norms, such as a family guide of suggested activities, a music CD, and an activity book that promotes healthy habits. To test the ease of use and appeal of the materials, we conducted focus groups with 3- to 6-year-old children as well as their parents and caregivers.

Macro conducted focus groups for concept-testing messages and potential materials for parents of teens with epilepsy. Working with a creative contractor, Macro used the results of the focus groups to refine the concepts and develop a plan for the production and dissemination of the materials. The creative contractor developed several workable concepts for materials, including message, tone, channels, and presentation. The concepts and associated messages and materials were then tested by Macro for appropriateness, appeal, realism, intelligibility, and usefulness.
