Demographic & Health Research

Macro has provided data collection, analysis, comparative reports, and technical support on these critical issues to more than 70 countries, predominantly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

As part of USAID’s Child Survival Technical Support program, Macro provides assistance to community-based child survival programs implemented by private voluntary organizations (PVOs) and their local partners.

On behalf of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Macro has been conducting Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) work around the world for more than two decades. These nationally representative household surveys include large sample sizes (usually between 5,000 and 30,000 households) and generally are conducted every 5 years to allow for comparisons over time. DHS staff members have advanced training in economics, sociology, behavioral psychology, statistics, management, and social marketing.

In addition to supporting major USAID programs, Macro has completed projects for international organizations, including the World Health Organization, the United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Rockefeller Foundation, and the World Bank.

Child survival programs strive to reduce illness and death through preventive health care programs aimed at infants, children, and mothers in the developing world. Macro supports the Child Survival Technical Support project through regional training events, telephone and in-person consulting, and dissemination of technical and informational documents, targeted specifically toward increasing the capacity of voluntary groups and grantees to achieve sustainable service delivery in public health interventions. Other assistance provided by Macro includes applied research, data collection, processing, information utilization, and ongoing program tracking.

For the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Program of Cancer Registries-Cancer Surveillance System (NPCR-CSS), Macro provides an electronic system to collect and process data from 63 State and territorial cancer registries in the United States. It also provides the programming and related services necessary to develop, implement, and maintain this electronic system. Macro is developing an automated system that collects, processes, provides quality control, and reports on data quality, case completeness, and cancer incidence and mortality rates for the Nation, regions, and States. The treated data is published in public-use data formats and in a restricted-access data format for researchers.
