Computer-based Training
Photo: Two ladies looking on to one computer monitor Computer-based training is a highly effective method of maximizing workforce exposure to training while containing training costs. When training is computer-based, it can be made accessible to anyone with computer access, can accommodate diverse schedules, and does not require an onsite trainer, travel time, or room reservations. Macro has combined its training and technological expertise to develop computer-based training that fits the specific needs of many clients. We design self-paced training modules, interactive trainings, distance learning, and trainings linked to person-to-person technical support. We integrate training evaluations into each Web-based training module, providing instant feedback on training effectiveness. We can develop training that qualifies for continuing education units. Computer-based training is just one of many ways Macro can help your employees and your organization move forward.

Macro designed an interactive multimedia training program for the United States Marine Corps that provided comprehensive instruction targeted to the duties and responsibilities of the Marine Corps Substance Abuse Control Officers (SACOs). One track of the application focuses on the rules and procedures of urinalysis testing for drug abuse. The other track focuses on alcohol and drug prevention activities conducted by the SACOs. The application uses content material designated by the Marines in a series of interactive learning modes, including video, still photographs, audio, text, and graphics. Interaction was provided by several techniques, including scenarios with interruptions at key decision points that allow users to choose a solution; checkpoints at which users self-test their levels of knowledge; and the opportunity to develop a unit prevention plan. A total of 10,000 copies were distributed to Marine installations around the world.

Macro, in cooperation with the MultiCultural Institute, has developed online diversity training modules for the faculty and staff of a large and diverse public school system. Training is based on self-paced learning accomplished through two Web-based training programs. The first program covers a wide variety of topics, such as how gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status influence classroom interactions; what factors affect classroom discipline; and strategies teachers can use in dealing with challenging situations. The second program is a series of interactive case studies that provide a safe, but realistic, environment for staff and faculty to practice the skills learned in classroom diversity training programs.

Macro supports CSAP’s initiative to expand prevention and treatment knowledge among prevention specialists and community leaders nationwide. We have developed a Web-based eight-unit course on the core knowledge of substance abuse prevention that is self-paced and self-instructional. Each unit includes clearly stated learning goals, course content, links to related Web sites, self-tests, and unit tests. Optional continuing education units are available for course completion through the University of Maryland, College Park.
