Testing can take place in several ways: in a controlled, laboratory environment; remotely, onsite at an organization, or at a professional conference. By providing these options, our usability team can be flexible while maintaining the highest standards of quality. Macro has an onsite, fully equipped usability lab.
Our usability lab includes:
- Dell Dimension 4300S with an Intel P4 1.8 GHZ processor, Intel
845 MB with video/LAN/audio, 256 MB DDR2100 RAM, 40GB
hard drive, 52x CD-ROM, and a 17" monitor
- Sony TRV-900 digital video camera
- Scan Do Pro II computer to video scan converter
- Videonics MX-Pro digital video mixer
- Rolls RM-65 6-input audio mixer
- Two Sony 8042-Q 8" color field monitors
- Sony GV-D900 digital video cassette recorder
We also have a portable usability workstation which enables us to go directly to the client. This portable workstation includes:
- HP Pavilion N5450 laptop computer, Intel Pentium III 571 MHZ processor,
256 MB RAM, 18 GB hard drive, DVD/CD-RW, with a 16" monitor
- Sony TRV-900 digital video camera
- Videonics MX-Pro digital video mixer
- Rolls RM-65 6-input audio mixer
- Sony GV-D900 digital video cassette recorder
- Handheld/desktop and lavalier microphones and accessories
- Miscellaneous cables
- All items housed in a SKB 16-space shockmount shipping case
This usability workstation is easy to transport and simple to set up. The personnel requirements are minimal; only a trained usability test proctor (often the lead usability engineer) and a videographer are required. While performing the usability testing, we can mix the video/audio in real time; display it on a split screen in a separate viewing room; and, if necessary, stream it to a remote location. This process has been performed at our Atlanta offices with great success, particularly with the testing of the Division of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Communications Database.
