Data Matching
Many analysis and program evaluation tasks require the collation of records that may be stored in multiple databases and various formats. The accurate collation of records that represent the same individual or institution allows the analyst to trace the experiences or activities of individuals over time or to examine program outcomes. Such linkage greatly increases the value of existing data and provides opportunities for analyses that would not otherwise be possible. Macro uses a variety of probabilistic record linkage software systems, including AutoMatch, to match records accurately. Our record linkage process consists of:

  • File preparation
  • Selection of blocking variables
  • Selection of matching variables
  • Preparation of match specifications
  • Indexing of the files
  • Frequency analysis
  • Linkage and clerical review
  • Output reports
  • File extraction

Woman working on the computer Information for Management, Planning, Analysis, and Coordination (IMPAC) II
Macro revised the Information for Management, Planning, Analysis, and Coordination (IMPAC) II database system and built a grant applicant Web portal for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The system ensures that individuals doing business with NIH are correctly and uniquely identified and that information associated with these individuals (such as demographics, degrees, and addresses) is accurate. Macro developed automated and manual procedures to keep the database error free and to correct errors in the database. We also identified strategies to improve the performance of the IMPAC II database and its associated interface applications.
