Data Dissemination Systems

If a system is designed to provide certain data to the general public, Macro works with the client to determine which data elements and reports should be made available. Data dissemination is an integral part of many research projects Macro conducts both nationally and internationally. These activities range from reports to clients and selected colleagues and collaborators to national public education campaigns.

Macro frequently provides data via online client portals, with access to data in near real time, opportunities to monitor research in progress and the clients' ability to conduct their own analysis as it becomes available.

Macro is the largest provider of BRFSS and related data collection services in the United States. We began conducting the BRFSS in 1989, a survey that provides the only nationwide health-risk data in the country. Macro uses online reporting to deliver the results and status of annual BRFSS surveys. Each month, Macro provides clients with a data file, along with a report that includes the response rate calculated by the CASRO method, upper-bound response rate, survey efficiency, and certain interview attributes such as demographic data, disposition codes, and completed interviews. We also provide BRFSS clients with weekly status reports through a password-protected Web site.

From India to Tanzania and Haiti to Mali, findings from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) project play a critical role in policy decisions on health and family planning. This data, which Macro collects, analyzes, and disseminates on behalf of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is used to design national programs and serves as the foundation for advocacy efforts.

Close to 200 surveys have been conducted in more than 75 countries over the past 20 years, giving policymakers meaningful data for decisionmaking. For example, the Prime Minister of India prominently cited DHS results for developing a major new program to eradicate hunger. The government of Gujarat State reoriented its nutrition programs to include younger children based on DHS findings on malnutrition in very young children.

DHS data is available at http://www.measuredhs.com/. The site which features data and reports on all national surveys; data on nutrition, education, family planning decisions, and women’s opportunities; and biomarkers, such as HIV incidence. At the local level, survey findings are published in a variety of ways depending on the needs of country audiences. Methods include print materials, seminars and trainings, audiovisual materials, electronic access to DHS data, media events and PSAs, and other channels of communication that reach program planners, policymakers, non-government organizations, and other groups.
