Database Development

Photo: Man training a woman on computerMacro builds analytic and object-oriented databases that provide managers and policy analysts with effective tools for data retrieval, analysis, planning, and decision support. Our database development is Web centered for Internet, intranet, or extranet deployment and is built in conjunction with ColdFusion, Java Server Pages, Flash, XML, or XHTML development. Databased developed by Macro span a variety of subject areas, including science and engineering resources; drug use and risk prevention information; biomedical research resources; science, engineering, and medical education; geographic information systems; cancer incidence and reporting; and general record linkage systems. We also develop large analytic database systems for the collection and dissemination of information, often with interfaces that integrate detailed data from a broad range of Federal and private data systems into a single, standardized, easy-to-access source.

Macro integrated five databases into one to streamline the access to updates of more than 80,000 bibliographic references related to substance abuse. The centralized bibliographic database can be accessed online and shared by persons involved in developing Federal policies and programs related to substance abuse. This site is the data entry point for all substance abuse-related publications, which are indexed by abstracts and keywords. The development of this centralized database saved time and money lost by agencies that had been maintaining individual and sometimes duplicative bibliographic databases, with updates periodically exchanged and re-entered into each agency’s separate database. All agencies now have equal access to and use of a complete reference list.
